A young photographer was gang-raped on her first magazine assignment by five men in a smart Mumbai suburb on Thursday night.
"Two colleagues from a city based magazine including the victim had reached Shakti Mill on Thursday evening to take pictures. They were confronted by some men, who asked the woman photographer, whether she had permission to take pictures of the mill compound.
"An argument broke out and the two men started abusing them and they were joined by few more. They assaulted the male accomplice of the victim and tied him up.
"They took the victim inside a building and gang raped her. She was threatened and attacked with broken glass bottles," he said.A spokesman for Mumbai police said the victim was an intern with a city magazine and had been attacked by men believed to be drug addicts.
One man was arrested on Friday and 20 police teams were pursuing four men who had been identified, said Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh.
The girl was admitted to hospital in south Mumbai where she was in stable condition, a hospital official told Reuters by e-mail.
Mumbaikars say they are shocked that such an attack could happen in the middle of the city that they pride as safe for women. South Mumbai MP Milind Deora tweeted, "Mumbai Police must get to the bottom of yesterday's alleged rape and punish the guilty ASAP. Mumbai takes pride in being a safe city for women."
