Man donates skin to daughter-in-law

By 10:00

AHMEDABAD: Time and time again there is news of how a daughter-in-law was either beaten up  or was set on fire by dowry-hungry families across India.
But Himmatsinh Rathod, donated large grafts of skin from his thighs to his daughter-in-law Monica Rathod, so that she could survive the burns she had sustained while cooking.

Monica was cooking lunch when the stove ran out of kerosene. Eager to finish off the cooking, Monica poured kerosene into hot stove, which burst into flames and engulfed her.
Monica sustained 64 per cent deep burns. Monica had extensive burns on the chest, arms, abdomen and lower limbs, leaving little space from which to take her own skin for grafts. Her father-in-law stepped up to donate the skin.
Monica, who is now recuperating well and has been declared to be out of danger, says that she is lucky to have a loving father-in-law who gave his skin to save her life.
Father-in-law Himmatsinh Rathod, who is a farmer in Kunda village, says that he stood up for his bahu because she is the daughter of the family. "I had to save my daughter's life," he says.
"This is the first case in my career in which a father-in-law donated skin for his daughter-in-law. We hope Himmatsinh serves as an example to the society for selfless service in the name of humanity," doctors said.
